Long Beach Poly boys’ volleyball opened Moore League action by sweeping Millikan on the road Tuesday evening 27-25, 25-22, 25-19.

“We had to lock in,” Poly coach Sid Davidson said. “We weren’t really focused at the beginning. We had to minimize our service errors and do what we needed to do.”

There were nervy moments early as both teams struggled with service errors. The Jackrabbits’ defense was able to turn the tide against big swings from the Rams.

“Our team captain Lucky (Iosua) stepped up today, coming off a great weekend tournament,” Davidson said.

Iosua and opposite Jackson Trunnelle each had 10 kills for Poly, while Iosua added a team-high seven digs.

Both teams couldn’t build a lead bigger than two or three points as all three sets stayed close until the end.

“Our communication set us apart and kept our team in it,” Iosua said. “We needed to minimize our mistakes after the first set and we kept on fighting back.”

Millikan outside hitter Jackson Cryst had a game-high 15 kills, and setter Logan Karkanen had 32 assists.

“We missed enough serves that would account for the difference in all of the scores,” Millikan coach Matt Johnson said. “Those mistakes we made we have one hundred percent control over that we will be fixing.”

Both teams are at home on Thursday as Millikan plays Jordan while Poly faces Wilson.
