Long Beach Sports Top 10 Moments Of 2021-22: St. Anthony Boys’ Basketball Defies Expectations

St. Anthony had a solid season under first-year head coach Alan Mitchell, and really continued to improve all the way through the postseason. After a third-place finish in the Del Rey League, the Saints weren’t expected to do much in the Division 1 bracket, opening up on the road at Dominguez.

All the Saints did was charge their way through to the semifinals, while demolishing the No. 4 seed in the bracket, a 25-2 Colony team, 75-54. The Saints came up short of the championship game, but added another upset in the SoCal Regional tournament, going on the road as the No. 11 seed to beat No. 6 Torrey Pines in the opening round. The lesson learned is don’t underestimate the Saints when it’s playoff time.
