Long Beach Sports Top 10 Moments Of 2021-22: Poly Basketball’s CIF Playoff Run

NUMBER NINE

Long Beach Poly came up 10 points short of the program’s 21st CIF-SS championship in a 78-69 defeat at Village Christian in the Division 2AA final, but it was still a memorable season for the state’s all-time wins leader. The Jackrabbits’ thrilling 50-45 win over Foothill on the road–behind 25 points from senior Gabe Cummings–was a season highlight, with the game-winning three from Cummings in the final seconds of the game.

The team, led by seniors Christian Watson, Cummings, Buddah Henry, Marcel Hayes, and others was one that head coach Shelton Diggs saw coming four years ago.

“This is why you come to Poly, to play for your city and to play for championships,” he said after the semifinal game. “I’m so happy for this senior group. Everybody in this senior class played on the freshman team as freshmen. I knew this was a special class to build with and I wanted them to play and grow together. They built it with us from the ground up–they wanted to win a championship and that’s what they’ve came to do every night.”
