Congratulations to all of our Athletes of the Week and thanks to Naples Rib Company for their sponsorship. This is our final awards for 2021; AOTW will return after the winter break.

HIGH SCHOOL

Sierra Sythe, Millikan Soccer

Millikan’s Sierra Sythe earns a second consecutive AOTW honor for another big performance last week. Sythe scored in the second half and led Millikan with four shots in a 3-1 win over Poly.

Anthony Garcia, Wilson Soccer

Wilson picked up a huge win over two-time defending league champ Poly last week, thanks to an incredible header goal from Anthony Garcia. His 64th-minute score gave Wilson a 1-0 victory.

Jovani Ruff, Poly Basketball

Poly freshman Jovani Ruff had a hell of a Moore League debut last week, leading an injury-plagued Poly team to a 65-39 win over Wilson. Ruff had 18 points and is Poly’s leading scorer this season.

Nala Williams, Poly Basketball

Poly senior Nala Williams has been leading her team this season, putting up 19 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and three steals in a win over Wilson last week. She was named MVP of the San Dimas Tournament after scoring 32 points in the championship.

Alijah LaGrone, Jordan Basketball

Sophomore Alijah LaGrone had a big night for Jordan in a Moore League-opening win over Compton. LaGrone scored 20 points to lead the Panthers in the win.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
