Senior forward Cherrie Cox continued her blistering start to the season, scoring a pair of first-half goals to propel Long Beach State to a 3-0 victory over Nevada Thursday night to close non-conference action.
With the offensive outburst, Cox has scored 10 goals this season and becomes the third athlete in program history to score double-digit goals – the first since Leno Silano. The win also gives the Beach six wins on season, besting LBSU’s total from a year ago.
The Beach took total control early and never looked back. Long Beach State struck first in the 4th minute when Cox found space inside the box and slotted a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net to put LBSU up 1-0.
Nevada struggled to generate momentum against the Beach backline and LBSU (6-1-2) created continuous pressure through the midfield, earning multiple corner kicks and controlling tempo throughout the opening period.In the 31st minute, Cox doubled the cushion with her second strike of the match.
Fresh off the bench, junior forward Kailey Supa set up the opportunity, feeding Cox for another clean finish into the bottom right corner to extend the lead to 2-0.
Long Beach State goalkeeper Amaya Sanles anchored the defense to secure the clean sheet. Nevada threatened in the 28th minute on a shot from Olivia Loomis, but Sanles turned it away with a bottom-left save.
She added another crucial save early in the second half, denying Leslie Jacobo Duran’s attempt in the 57th minute to preserve the shutout.
Radisson Banks extended the Beach’s lead when she scored on a penalty kick in the 88th minute to push the lead to 3-0.
In the goal for the Beach was Amaya Sanles who had four saves in her second start.
LBSU will stay on the road to open Big West action when they travel to take on UC Santa Barbara next Wednesday.
