Poly at Millikan
Poly opened their 2024 Moore League season with a 20-1 road victory over Millikan. Senior Victor Lim and junior Nga Pham led the Jackrabbits from the outset with an authoritative victory in their first Mixed Doubles match. Lim added three more victories during the night, one more in Mixed Doubles with Pham and two in Boys’ Doubles with partner Leo Torres Orozco. Pham dominated her subsequent singles matches, beating her Ram opponents 21-5, 21-5.
Illness forced Poly to assemble a somewhat patchwork lineup, putting senior Cass Hervas in Mixed Doubles and pulling up a couple of JV girls, Danika Hour and Felicia Toch, for their first Varsity appearances. Hervas won her mixed game while Hour and Toch split their Girls’ Doubles matches.
Millikan got a victory in Girls’ Doubles when Zoe Huynh and Vickie Lam defeated Hour and Toch.
Ten of the twelve Jackrabbits that saw action swept all of their matches.

Wilson at Lakewood
Lakewood won its league opener over visiting Wilson 14-7.
Junior Jacob Vong, a recent inductee to Lakewood’s Youth Hall of Fame, starred for Lancers. Vong won all four of his matches, pairing with Seylha Kong in Mixed Doubles and fellow junior Richie Chhit in Boys’ Doubles.
In spite of the Lancer’s authoritative victory in their home gym, Wilson’s Abhishek Jain continued to put his stamp on Moore League Boys’ Singles, defeating Lakewood’s Nato Sarin and Angel Bracamontes in two sets each.
One of the afternoon’s highlights came early on and saw Vong and Kong win a come-from-behind three set thriller against Jain and Susana Martinez 16-21, 21-16, 21-16. This victory, along with wins in both of the other opening Mixed matches and the first Girls’ Doubles game, gave Lakewood a 4-0 advantage and forced the Bruins into playing catchup for the rest of the night.
Cabrillo vs. Loyola/Mayfield
The Jaguars traveled to Pasadena to play against the combined team of boys’ school Loyola and girls’ school Mayfield. Cabrillo was flawless in every girls’ event, dominating each one in two sets. Cabrillo’s three Mixed Doubles pairs were similarly undefeated.
Brian Habacon and Joaquin Orozco hit a road block in Boys’ Singles. The Jaguars lost all four to Loyola in extremely tight matches. Cabrillo still defeated Loyola and Mayfield 14-7.
Cabrillo will return to Moore League competition next Thursday when they host Wilson.
