Long Beach Poly Coach Ken Lee Named CIF Champion For Character

The562’s football coverage for the 2026-27 school year is sponsored by Long Beach Poly alums Wendell “WoWo” Moe, Jr. & Tyson Ruffins.

Long Beach Poly wrestling coach Ken Lee was named a CIF Champion for Character last month, an honor recognizing his commitment to sportsmanship, academic achievement and helping student-athletes grow beyond the wrestling mat.

Lee and fellow honorees were recognized at a CIF Southern Section dinner in September.

For Lee, the award reflects what he believes coaching is really about: preparing young people for life, not just competition.

“As a coach, I have always believed that athletics is about more than wins and losses,” Lee said. “It is about helping young people develop character, discipline, respect, and the courage to do what is right even when no one is watching.”

That philosophy has helped shape Poly’s wrestling program, where academic success and personal development are central to what Lee is passionate about for the athletes he coaches.

Last school year, the boys’ wrestling team earned a CIF State Academic Championship with a 3.7 grade-point average, the highest among boys wrestling programs in California. The boys also captured consecutive CIF Southern Section academic championships, while the girls program earned a Southern Section academic title.

For Lee, success goes beyond what happens during practice or competition. He has worked to build a program centered on preparation, accountability, teamwork and respect, encouraging student-athletes to take those values into the classroom and their daily lives.

That approach reflects Poly’s identity as the Home of Scholars and Champions.

Lee credited his coaching staff, alumni and mentors for helping create an environment where student-athletes can thrive on and off the mat. He thanked assistant coach Harry Chung and former coaches Monico Enriquez and Roger Rios for their guidance and support. Lee was also grateful to Poly’s administration for the opportunity they’ve given him.

“Coaching is never a one-person effort, and I am grateful for everyone who gives their time, energy, and heart to helping our student-athletes succeed,” Lee said.

While Lee focuses on the more than the off-the-mat accomplishments, the Poly wrestling program has been one of the best in the area as the girls team won its fourth straight Moore League title, while the boys team won its first league title since the 1980s.

The CIF Southern Section Champions for Character award honors individuals who demonstrate integrity, respect, fair play and positive leadership through education-based athletics.

For Lee, the recognition reinforces his commitment to helping students develop skills and values that will serve them long after their athletic careers end.

“Winning is always special, but the greatest reward in coaching is watching young people grow into better students, better teammates, better leaders, and better people,” Lee said.
