Swimming: Wilson Girls Win Title on Hamilton’s Historic Night

Long Beach Wilson Sammie Hamilton had some lofty goals heading into her junior season.

Safe to say, Hamilton exceeded those expectations as she competed in four events and won all four in record-breaking fashion Thursday night during the Moore League Girls swimming finals, as Wilson took the Moore League title.

Hamilton took first place in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and was the anchor in Wilson’s first place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Her 200 free time was a Moore League record as was the 500 free time, and she earned high school All-American honors and a Junior Nationals invite in both events.

“We were really excited going into this year,” Hamilton said. “It was really close, we all worked really hard this year. We actually put in extra time. I had some big goals for this year and I accomplished all of them so I’m super happy.” The Wilson relays squads took down the 200 and 400 relay records as well.

Along with Hamilton, Wilson had two other first place finishers with Vanessa Newton (50-yard freestyle) and Katherine O’Dea (100-yard freestyle).

Long Beach Poly started the night taking first place in the 200-yard Medley Relay as Sofia Brys, Lauryn Hong, Maya Guarava and Belle Puckett finished ahead of Millikan Poly.

Brys took first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:09.81.

Millikan’s Kylie Montiel also took home two first place finishes winning the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke.
