PREVIEW: Jordan vs. Compton, Football

The 91 Gridiron Trophy is on the line tonight when Jordan hosts Compton in Moore League action. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Last year was the first time these two schools played for the new 91 Gridiron Trophy and Jordan came away with a 33-14 victory. That game had its share of big plays from both offenses and this year should be no different.

Compton (4-2, 2-0) should be the healthier side coming off its bye week after a dramatic 27-25 win over Wilson. The emergence of running back junior John John Bledsoe and return of senior Erick Barrios from injury has the Compton double wing rushing attack humming right now. Bledsoe is averaging over 100 yards rushing in two games.

Jordan (4-2, 0-2) should be very hungry tonight after a pair of disappointing league losses at Millikan and at Lakewood. The Panthers haven’t had any problems scoring points this season after scoring over 30 points in all but one game. Running back Jordan Washington has rushed for 740 yards and 11 touchdowns while quarterback J.J. Nielsen has thrown for 1,166 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

Since both teams don’t have a ton of depth, this game could come down to which defense can force the turnovers that will go a long way in dictating time of possession.

The result could also have a big effect on the hunt for that third playoff spot. A Compton win could really separate the field with Poly, Millikan and Compton at the top. But a Jordan win could make it a three-team race for the third spot.
