Athlete of the Week Cross Country Long Beach State Millikan Soccer Softball Wilson

HIGH SCHOOL

Jason Parra, Millikan Cross Country

Millikan freshman Jason Parra won the boys’ Moore League cross country championship with a time of 15:06 on the three-mile course last week. Parra’s time was 10 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Natalie Seymour, Wilson Cross Country

Wilson freshman Natalie Seymour won the girls’ Moore League cross country championship last week, winning with a time of 19:42 to cap a wild league championships race. Seymour was injured to start the season and was in just the second varsity race of her life.

Aj’ae Gravelly, Millikan Football

Millikan’s Aj’ae Gravelly led the Rams to a big win over Compton last Saturday in the first official football game played in Millikan’s new stadium. Gravelly had 20 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Gavin Pool-Harris, Wilson Soccer

Wilson sophomore Gavin Pool-Harris may be playing in goal, but the keeper was the star of the show in a big Moore League clash between Wilson and Millikan last week. Pool-Harris had 12 saves in a 1-0 Bruins victory.

Olivia Herrera, Wilson Soccer

Sophomore Wilson goalie Olivia Herrera led the Bruin girls to a 3-0 win over first-place Millikan last week, putting the Bruins in first place in league. Herrera had 13 saves in the shutout to hold Millikan off the scoreboard.

COLLEGE

Shannon Haddad, Long Beach State Softball

Long Beach State freshman Shannon Haddad was named Big West Pitcher of the Week after helping lead LBSU to a 3-1 record last weekend. Haddad made three appearances in the circle and did not allow a run in 12 innings pitched, including a complete game shutout against UC Davis.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
