Girls’ Basketball: Millikan Stays In First With Win Over Wilson

STORY AND VIDEO BY MATT SIMON

Looking to keep her team unbeaten, Millikan sophomore Allison Crawford notched her tenth double-double of the season and her sixth in a row.

With 34 points and 18 rebounds, Crawford took care of business as the Rams withstood a late comeback attempt to defeat Long Beach Wilson 81-73 Monday night.

“I just felt I needed to keep pushing no matter what,” Crawford said. “For me it was just like fighting for what’s yours.”

The Rams (15-0, 4-0) did just that as they strolled to a 21-12 first quarter lead behind seven points from junior Vanessa Smith.

Millikan continued dominant with their bigs and extended the lead to 57-38 heading into the final quarter.

“Parts of this we played our gameplan,” Millikan coach Lorene Morgan said. “We were playing hard the whole time, so that’s not the issue. Sometimes we need to be able to play smart the entire game.”

Trailing by double digits heading into the final quarter, Ashley Hawkins and Arielle Hines led a furious comeback attempt as the Bruins (13-6, 2-2) outscored Millikan 35-24 in the final eight minutes.

Hawkins finished the contest with 25 points, while Hines finished with 21.

Millikan will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Lakewood and Wilson will host Long Beach Poly.
