Compton football is back in the playoffs.
Following a historic regular season in which the Tarbabes captured the Hub City League championship — their first league title since 1979 — Compton is back in the postseason for the first time since 2021.
The Tarbabes (9-1) will host Ramona (Riverside) on Friday at 7 p.m. It will mark the first football playoff game at Compton’s new facility.
“We’re excited,” Compton coach Calvin Bryant said. “It’ll be nice to have the fans out here to support us.”
Senior running back Edward Rivera, a Sacramento State commit, has been the driving force behind Compton’s success. Rivera has amassed more than 1,700 yards and scored 28 touchdowns while showcasing his versatility in all phases of the game.
Quarterback Donnie Johnson has also been efficient, throwing for more than 1,000 yards to lead the offense. On the defensive side, senior Jay’Rome Norwood has emerged as a leader, recording 66 tackles and 13 tackles for loss.
Ramona (7-3), meanwhile, enters the matchup as the River Valley League champion. The Rams also bring plenty of postseason experience after reaching the CIF Southern Section Division 9 championship game last season.
“They’re a very well-coached team,” Bryant said. “We’re busy getting ready for them.”
The Rams feature a balanced offensive attack led by senior Jesus Gonzalez, who has thrown for 1,469 yards and 15 touchdowns while accounting for seven interceptions. Gonzalez is also a threat on the ground, rushing for 589 yards and seven touchdowns.
