Thanks to an exciting win at Wilson last week, there’s added importance on Senior Night for the Lakewood Lancers (3-6, 1-2) as they host the Jordan Panthers (0-8, 0-2) in their regular season finale on Friday at 7 p.m.
After dropping their first two Moore League games against Long Beach Poly and Millikan, the Lancers knocked off Wilson by a score of 21-14 to re-enter the race for second place and the automatic playoff berth that comes with it.
If Lakewood can pick up its second league win of the year against the visiting Panthers, they’ll have a realistic shot at a three-way tie for second place, leaving its playoff fate to a possible envelope draw.
The Lancers’ defense was solid against Wilson last week, and they’ll look to roll that momentum over as the offense continues to lean on the running game. All three of Lakewood’s running backs–Jacob Carey, Jordan Montgomery, and Thales Nguyen–found the end zone last week, giving them plenty of options to attack the Jordan defense.
For J-Town, they’re looking to build some positives in what’s been a challenging season so far. In a trip to Millikan last week, the Panthers faced an early onslaught and fell behind 35-0 in the opening quarter. Jordan was able to battle back but still suffered a 60-14 setback.
Running back Khayiel Wisner was a bright spot for Jordan’s offense with 14 carries for 123 yards, and Sama’jay Jackson delivered a TD reception as well for J-Town.
Lakewood enters this matchup with a 16-game winning streak over Jordan. The Panthers’ last win over the Lancers was a 21-14 victory during the 2008 season.
