It’s a pivotal Moore League battle this evening as Wilson hosts Lakewood in a game that has enormous playoff implications. Both the Bruins (2-6, 1-1) and Lancers (2-6, 0-2) already carry league losses, with another loss this evening likely eliminating either from contention for gaining one of the Moore League’s two guaranteed spots.
The host Bruins beat Compton and Jordan for their first two wins of the year before suffering a 44-0 defeat to Poly last week. The Bruins’ gameplan is simple: get the ball to their playmakers Jermel Grigsby and Kyle Harris, both of whom are a threat to score a touchdown on any play they get the ball. The duo average over 130 yards from the line of scrimmage per game as a duo. The Bruins have looked to two quarterbacks recently, as season-long starter Logan Trafas has been joined by Servite transfer Jacob Powell to split carries. Linebacker Kingston Meyer leads the way defensively with nine tackles a game, alongside Dylan Sula who has 8.5 tackles per game.
For Lakewood, the game on offense is simply to establish some consistency scoring. A young Lancers offense has struggled at times, with three of their eight games seeing them score three or fewer points. Quarterback Aidan Kautsky has been solid for the Lancers and does have playmakers in Terrish Weston Jr. and Jayden Moore, while running back Thales Nguyen has been a bruiser.
Weston has been a bright spot for the Lancers’ defense with his ball-hawking sills.
The Bruins have a bye next week before finishing at home against Millikan on Oct. 30; the Lancers host Jordan next week in their finale before taking their bye the last week of the regular season.
