Long Beach Poly 21, Villa Park 6

The Jackrabbits went on the road and took care of business in their Division 3 opener. Brooklyn Richardson was a big part of the action for Poly, catching the first TD of the day on a pass from Makayla Lumpkin, who later connected with Ki’ele Ho-Ching to put Poly up 12-0.

The Jackrabbit defense added onto the scoring as Sophia Hernandez collected a safety for Poly to add two points to the score, and Ho-Ching also snagged an interception for the Poly defense. Finally, Richardson went in at quarterback and ran in the final score of the day while also running in the two-point conversion to send the Jackrabbits to the next round.

Poly will be at home on Saturday for round two, hosting Norco High with the start time still to be announced.

Compton 32, Sierra Vista 24

In the Division 4 opener, Compton made program history with their first-ever playoff win, rallying in the fourth quarter to secure the road victory.

The Tarbabes trailed 24-20 with just over two minutes to play, but that’s when Miah Gibson connected with Ariel Willard for the go-ahead touchdown. On the ensuing possession, Willard gave Compton some insurance with a pick-six to punch Compton’s ticket to round two.

The Tarbabes are set to host Claremont on Saturday in their next contest.
