There was a lot to play for on Monday evening as the Moore League flag football regular season came to a close. The Lakewood Lancers were playing for pride on their home field, while the Compton Tarbabes were playing for a shot at a shared Moore League title.
The host Lancers got out to a red-hot start, scoring 19 unanswered points in the first quarter to take control of the game. And despite Compton’s best effort to come back, Lakewood held on for an impressive 19-14 win.
Layla Kawarmura opened the scoring for Lakewood with a rushing touchdown, followed by a Pick 6 from Kayla Bullard to give the Lancers a two-score lead. Lastly, a touchdown grab by Allison Honeycutt ended Lakewood’s scoring flurry that knocked Compton back on its heels.
Compton was able to rally back within a score, and had possession in the Lakewood red zone at the end of the game, but they were unable to punch in a go-ahead score to complete their comeback.
Despite missing their chance to share a Moore League title with Long Beach Poly and Millikan, the Tarbabes are still headed for a CIF-SS playoff berth thanks to their third-place finish in league. Playoff brackets will be released on Friday, and The562 will have updates on where all the local playoff teams will be playing.
