The Long Beach baseball community is in shock and mourning after the sudden, tragic passing of Scott Reed last Tuesday after a medical emergency. Reed was a longtime youth baseball coach and boardmember at Long Beach Little League.
“Our hearts are broken by the tragic and unexpected passing of Scott Reed,” LBLL said in an Instagram post. “Scott was a beloved husband, devoted father, passionate coach, and loyal friend who would give anyone the shirt off his back. Any day of the week, you could find him at Long Beach Little League giving his time and heart to the kids and community he loved.”
Social media was flooded with tributes from friends, fellow coaches, and players impacted by Reed’s countless hours spent at the fields.
“I’ve known Scott for nearly 30 years and he is genuinely one of the nicest humans I’ve ever met,” wrote Andrew Ramos, a high school baseball teammate of Reed’s at Long Beach Poly and the current head coach at Golden West. “I don’t think he had a mean bone in his body. My heart goes out to (his family). The community will be here for you guys the same way Scott would have been there for any of us.”
The community has rallied around a GoFundMe set up to help Reed’s family deal with expenses related to his passing as well as to help make up for lost income:
Reed’s wife, Jessica, works in the activities office at Long Beach Poly, where their two of their three children attend school and play sports. Reed’s volunteer efforts didn’t just stop at the baseball field–he also volunteered on the chain gang for Poly football games.
He was in attendance and helping out at the Jackrabbits’ last game at Veterans Memorial Stadium two weeks ago when he told friends he wasn’t feeling well and had to go home. Later that night he ended up in the hospital, where he passed four days later due to an intestinal blockage.
Reed leaves behind his wife, Jessica, and their children Peyton, Winston, and Langston along with extended family and an entire community of those who loved him.
A remembrance of life will be held at Stearns Champions Park on October 3 at 4pm.
