Long Beach Poly senior Lucas Jue won the CIF State championship in the 500 yard freestyle last weekend, taking the crown in more than a full second with a swim of 4:22.04.
Jue joins the recent ranks of young Long Beach swim legends like Wilson’s Samantha Hamilton (500 free) and Poly’s Colin Geer (200 IM) in claiming a rare individual swim championship. For all of the Olympians Long Beach has produced, individual swim championships had been rare until the last five years.
Jue, a Louisville signee, is an All-American swimmer who rewrote the Moore League record books over the last several years. After winning the CIF State meet, he got changed and wore his first-place medal over his suit when he went to Poly’s prom.
Jue also made it to the State finals in the 100 yard backstroke, where he finished ninth in 53.06.
Jue wasn’t the only Long Beach athlete competing–Millikan junior Sienna Ramirez raced in the 100 yard backstroke and finished in 22nd place with a time of 1:04.56.
