Boys’ Golf: Wilson Freshman Claims Moore League Individual Title

The Moore League Boys’ Golf Individual Tournament took place this week and ended with a bang on Thursday. After three days of competition, Wilson freshman John Schroeder was crowned the champion, with a pair of Millikan Rams and fellow Bruins filling out the top five spots.

“Millikan kids, Wilson kids, Lakewood kids, Poly kids, Cabrillo kids, when they were out there these last four days, there’s no animosity between anybody,” Millikan Head Coach Robert Tomlin said. “All the kids, have played the league matches together, they all get along. It’s not like some other team sports where one team might hate the other team or something, but all five of the schools, the kids, were just awesome these last four days.”

31 golfers across the Moore League came out to the green for the Individual Tournament. Schroeder led the competition from the jump, ending the first day with a score of 70. Millikan’s Daniel Anderson was close behind with a score of 71, followed by Wilson’s Bodie Barnes with 73, Millikan’s Tyler Carmichael with 76 and Millikan’s Matteo Montiel with 78 to wrap up the top finishers for the first day of the tournament.

For the second day, the golfers moved from Skylinks to El Dorado Golf Course, where the Moore League stayed in a tight race of competition.

Schroeder increased his lead over the field with a second consecutive round of 2-under 70. Anderson and Barnes finished the day tied in 2nd place with a total of 150.

“Schroeder, who’s a very, very good player, jumped out to the lead after the first two days and then never looked back,” Tomlin said.

Heading into the final two rounds, the field was cut from 31 golfers down to the top 17 as the competition moved to Recreation Park. Schroeder maintained his lead with a 73, but Carmichael was the medalist of the third day with a 72. Carmichael’s score put him into a tie for 2nd place with fellow Ram Daniel Anderson.

“Daniel and Tyler, they’re just awesome kids, putting all golf aside, they’re both great students, both great people, and I’m just super proud to even have them on on my team,” Tomlin said. “Tyler on two of the days had the low single day round. Daniel made a great comeback today [Thursday] on the back nine, had four birdies.”

The final round of the tournament saw the golfers return to Skylinks with the trophy on the line. Schroder stayed in the lead to claim the Individual title, finishing the fourth round with a score of 77 and overall of 290 across the tournament.

Barnes had the lowest score of the day with a 69, moving him into 2nd place with a total of 294. Anderson shot a 73 in the final round, finishing with a 297 total, and Carmichael shot 76 for a total of 300.

“Tyler and Daniel set huge examples for all the other kids on the team,” Tomlin said. “They’re both great leaders, and the way that they played these four days was just phenomenal.”

The top five golfers qualify for the CIF Tournament, but there was a battle for who that fifth spot was going to be given to. Wilson’s Ethan Lewis from the second card and Leo Case from the third card were neck-and-neck fighting for the final spot.

The two were tied and went to a 2-hole sudden-death playoff. Ultimately, it was Lewis who came out victorious and claimed that final spot, finishing with a total score of 317.

The CIF Individual Regional will begin May 11 on the Moore League’s home turf. The Long Beach representatives will get a home field advantage as the tournament kicks off at Skylinks.
