Despite last second changes in the time and location of their matchup, the Long Beach City College Vikings found themselves right back in the win column while visiting Cypress College, defeating the Chargers 3-1.
Cypress made themselves at home to open the game by intercepting a pass across the Vikings back line, where Alex Gomez jumped on the mistake and put Cypress up 1-0 in the ninth minute. Less than ten minutes later, Jose Mariscal would even the score 1-1, sneaking the ball into the far side netting off of an assist from Julian Zarate. The teams stayed knotted up at one apiece heading into the half.
Less than four minutes after the break, Mariscal returned the favor with an assist across the box to Zarate who was able to slot away the ball for the game winner. Zarate didn’t stop there, scoring his brace off of a one-on-one with the keeper following a superb pass by sophomore Hector Tellez.
The win moves LBCC atop the region with a record of 3-0 and up to the number two spot in the southern region overall standings. The Vikings will be hosting Santa Ana on Tuesday for a 4 pm start baring any rescheduling due to potential heat.
