It was a thrilling afternoon at Poly Friday night as the Jackrabbits hosted Wilson in a battle of rivals.

With a standing-room only crowd, the Bruins and Jackrabbits split their contests with Wilson boys defeating Poly 90-80 and the Poly girls taking the win 108-63.

For the Bruins’ boys’ team, there was some lingering sting from last year’s Moore League finals loss to Poly that snapped Wilson’s 49-year reign as league champion.

Wilson came in firing and picked up some key victories in relays – including the 200 yard free relay that gave the Bruins just enough cushion to capture the victory.

Wyatt Mitchell anchored that victory with 21.60 split and said that this meet was more than just a regular season contest. In that event, Addison Ehrenfeld, Jesse Knight, Samson Casem led the way for Mitchell to cap off the win.

“We were really hungry,” Mitchell said. “We lost last year, that was absolutely devastating, 49 years that’s longer than I’ve been around almost as long as my dad’s been around. He was a part of that history as well – everyone in this community has been part of that history and that loss was devastating.”

For the girls, it was a collective effort as the Jackrabbits had multiple athletes take gold including Sofia Brys who took gold in two individual events and two relay events.

“I was just really proud of all the girls,” Brys said. “We tried really hard, we’ve really been pushing it in practice and we all came together as a team.”

Brys wasn’t the only Jackrabbit taking multiple golds as Maya Guevara, Belle Puckett, and Anna Mor came away with big wins to give Poly the comfortable win.
