Long Beach Basketball Teams Learn CIF-SS Fate, Playoffs Begin This Week

The Long Beach boys’ and girls’ basketball teams who qualified for the playoffs learned their postseason path on Sunday with the release of the CIF Southern Section basketball brackets. That included one team, Wilson, who got in as an at-large after losing in a fourth-place tiebreaker game to Cabrillo last week.

Boys’ Basketball

First-round boys’ basketball playoff games will be on Wednesday at 7 p.m., with second-round games on Friday.

Division 2AA: St. Anthony (20-7) will host Sonora (20-8) in a high-level matchup of the second seed from the Del Rey League and the second seed from the Freeway League. If the Saints win they’d face the winner of La Serna and Loyola. The Saints were ranked No. 7 in Division 2AA in the final rankings of the year.

Division 2A: Long Beach Poly (20-8) will host La Canada (16-12) in a meeting of the Moore League champion Jackrabbits and the Rio Hondo League second-seed. Poly would face the winner of Upland and Redlands East Valley in the second round with a win. The Jackrabbits were seeded No. 3 in Division 2A.

Division 2A: Lakewood (20-8) will take a long road trip to Adelanto (22-6), which is out past Victorville. The Lancers were ranked No. 9 in Division 2A and will face the winner of Flintridge Prep and San Gabriel Academy in the second round with a win.

Division 3AA: Jordan (14-14) is traveling to face Keppel (22-5) in a first-round game; with a win the Panthers would likely have to face the top-seeded La Habra squad.

Division 3AA: Wilson (16-12) got the good news that they made it into the bracket as an at-large, having finished fifth in the Moore League. The Bruins will take a long trip to Hesperia for a 6 p.m. first round game.

Division 4A: Cabrillo (15-13) will hit the road to face Miramonte League champion Pomona (14-13), as the Jags try to continue their historic season with a playoff win. If they pull off the upset the Jags would face the winner of La Salle and Loma Linda Academy. The Jaguars are ranked No. 9.

Girls’ Basketball

First-round girls’ basketball games will be on Thursday at 7 p.m., with second-round games on Saturday.

Division 1: Long Beach Poly (21-7) is the only Division 1 program in the city this year, and the Jackrabbits will host Chaminade in their playoff opener. A win would put Poly up against the winner of O Lu and Canyon.

Division 2AA: St. Anthony (20-7) will travel to Great Oak (17-7) in a game where the Saints will be favored, as they’re ranked No. 3 in the bracket. The Saints would face the winner of Crean Lutheran and West Torrance on Saturday with a win.

Division 2A: Lakewood (23-5) got the second seed out of the Moore League and the Lancers are ranked No. 2 in their division, hosting Northview in the first round. With a win they’d face the winner of Sunny Hills and Xavier Prep.

Division 3A: Jordan (19-8) is ranked No. 3 in the division and will travel to Mayfair for a local first-round matchup. The Panthers would see the winner of La Serna and Rio Hondo Prep with a win.

Division 3A: Millikan (15-13) will travel to Miramonte League champion Garey in the first round.
