PREVIEW: Cabrillo Girls’ Soccer

Despite losing some key players to graduation and injuries, the Cabrillo girls’ soccer team still has high hopes for this season.

“We’re always working on being better than last year, and I’m happy that’s continuing,” said senior Cassandra Mora (pictured). “Last year, we were all adjusting to getting a new coach and just having a new program entirely. It ended up working out because we realized our true potential and we’re just going to carry that on to this year.”

Coach Rudy Gonzalez said he’s counting on Mora and fellow team captain Azul Montecinos to lead this squad on and off the field. Montecinos is a lock-down defender and Mora can play multiple positions after working on her mental approach.

“We’re all really close and you can tell we’re connecting more,” Mora said. “The different stuff (coach) is bringing to (training) makes us more well rounded.”

Because of the big holes to fill on the roster, Gonzalez said he’ll have to depend more on underclassmen like Emily Vazquez and Deevine Zumbado.

The marquee Moore League game for Cabrillo will be the 710 Rivalry against Jordan. They played a thrilling 1-1 draw last season. Jordan visits Cabrillo on Dec. 19.
