Basketball: St. Anthony Girls Off to Fast Start

The St. Anthony girls’ basketball team is off to a great start this year.

The Saints are 6-3 on the young season, looking like the contenders in the Del Rey League that we expected them to be this season. St. Anthony owns recent wins over Rosary Academy and Santa Monica, as well as narrow losses to Crean Lutheran (by a point) and Mira Costa.

The Saints are off this week before traveling to Arizona next week for the Nike Tournament of Champions. They’ll start league play the first week of January with a road game at Bishop Montgomery. The unquestioned leader so far has been Ryann Bennett, who is averaging 19.1 points per game, backed up by 12.7 points per game from MeLaiah Joseph. Sophomore Anaya Tunu leads the team in rebounding with 6.2 per game.

The Saints are up to No. 4 in the CIF-SS Division 2AA rankings this week.
