HIGH SCHOOL

Kali Murrell, St. Anthony Basketball

One of St. Anthony’s star Murrell twins, senior Kali Murrell led St. Anthony to a big win over Wilson last week, as the Saints won 80-34. Murrell almost outscored the Bruins by herself with 29 points in the win.

Eryn Cayetano, St. Anthony Tennis

Even though St. Anthony doesn’t have a tennis team, the Saints do have a tennis star: senior Eryn Cayetano, who won a CIF-SS individual championship last week by winning the singles title after coming back  4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Justin Rene, Long Beach Poly Basketball

Long Beach Poly went 3-1 in their first tournament of the season last week, led by senior Justin Rene. The Jackrabbits’ leading scorer on the week, Rene had 22, 19, 14, and 16 points in the Jackrabbits’ four games, an average of 17.75 ppg.

Shayna Sanders, Compton Basketball

The Compton girls’ basketball team is off to an 8-3 start to the season and is ranked No. 1 in their CIF-SS division. The Tarbabes are led by Shayna Sanders, who had two huge games in wins last week, putting up 30 points in one and 28 points in another. Sanders is Compton’s leading scorer on the year.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
