Maya O’Dea, Wilson Water Polo

Wilson star senior Maya O’Dea helped lead the Bruins to a big 9-7 win over Harvard-Westlake last week, dominating on the offensive end. O’Dea finished with four goals and three assists, meaning she scored or assisted on seven of her team’s nine goals.

Deshon McMiller, Cabrillo Basketball

Cabrillo’s Deshon McMiller has been fueling the Jaguars’ 6-3 start, leading his team on the offensive end. In a win over Anaheim that snapped a two-game losing streak last week, McMiller had a game-high 24 points.


Malia Bambrick, Long Beach State Basketball

Malia Bambrick led LBSU to a 67-59 victory over California Baptist last week as she tallied a team-high 16 points as she connected on 7-of-14 field goals to shoot 50 percent in the game.

Bonard Johnson Jr., LBCC Basketball 

LBCC’s Bonard Johnson Jr. helped lead the Vikings to the tournament championship last weekend at the Wild West Shootout. Johnson, a Lakewood alum, scored a team-high 23 points with six rebounds and four steals in a 27-point win in the championship.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
