HIGH SCHOOL

Rose Cano, St. Anthony Softball

St. Anthony’s Rose Cano pitched a complete game for St. Anthony in the CIF State Regional championship, yielding just an unearned run. She also started the decisive rally with a leadoff single in the seventh.

Miracle McKenzie, St. Anthony Softball

Miracle McKenzie got to play hero for the Saints in their CIF State Regional championship win. McKenzie’s “miraculous” game-winning 2-RBI single gave the Saints the trophy.

COLLEGE

Jason Smith, Long Beach State Track & Field

Jason Smith has left his mark as the best jumper in Long Beach State history, as the record holder in multiple events. Last week he punched his ticket to this weekend’s NCAA Finals in the long jump and triple jump.

Tiare Jennings, Oklahoma Softball 

St. Anthony softball alum Tiare Jennings led Oklahoma (56-2 on the year) to two wins at the College World Series last week. Jennings went 3-for-6 with 6 RBIs and 3 runs in wins over Texas and Northwestern, accounting for nine of her team’s 20 runs.

Mike Guardabascio
An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
