HIGH SCHOOL

Ethan Schwichtenberg, St. Anthony Golf

St. Anthony’s Schwichtenberg had a huge week, shooting a three-under 68 in prelims and a 78 at finals to win the Camino Real League title.

Andy Nguyen, Millikan Tennis

Millikan’s Andy Nguyen easily defended his Moore League singles title last week, defeating teammate Nolan Alvarez 6-0, 6-0 to claim this year’s crown.

Hank Rivers, Wilson Swimming

Cal-bound Wilson senior Hank Rivers was man of the meet for Wilson as he led the Bruins to a 49th straight league title; Rivers won the 200 free and the 100 breaststroke and anchored the winning 200 free relay that set a new league record.

Sammie Hamilton, Wilson Swimming

Wilson star sophomore Sammie Hamilton won the 200 free and 500 free and led the 200 and 400 free relays to wins, helping the Wilson girls win their first league title since 2015 last week. The 200 free relay broke a 17 year old league record.

Cameron Hegamin, Millikan Baseball

In a season marked by great pitching performances, the last memory of the 2022 regular season will be a huge hit from Millikan centerfielder Cameron Hegamin against Poly; his bases-loaded RBI single delivered a walkoff win and sole possession of the league title to Millikan.

Francesca Acosta, Millikan Gymnastics

The 2022 Moore League Gymnast of the Year is Millikan’s Francesca Acosta, continuing the Rams’ run of dominance in gymnastics.

Isaac Lewis, Wilson Track & Field

Wilson junior Isaac Lewis was a star at Moore League finals, with individual wins in the 110 hurdles, the 300 hurdles, and the 400–he also helped the Bruins to a win in the 4×400 relay.

Lauren Reed, Long Beach Poly Track & Field

Poly senior Lauren Reed was the jumps queen of the Moore League Finals, winning the long jump and triple jump, and helping the Jackrabbits win the 4×100 relay. She also qualified for CIF-SS prelims in the 100.

Prongha Talukder, Long Beach Poly Badminton

Poly’s Prongha Talukder claimed the Moore League badminton singles title by defeating teammate Juan Vasquez 21-8, 21-10.

Maryssa Tan, Long Beach Poly Badminton

Poly’s Maryssa Tan claimed the girls singles championship after defeating teammate Krista Lim 18-21, 21-17, 22-20.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
