HIGH SCHOOL

Joshua “Noodles” Cason, Long Beach Poly Football

Long Beach Poly’s run game was the star of the show in Saturday’s championship win, and junior Devin Samples could easily have won his third Athlete of the Week award. But sophomore Josh “Noodles” Cason had 133 yards rushing and a touchdown, and also led the team’s defense with eight tackles including two for a loss.

Wendell “Wowo” Moe, Long Beach Poly Football

Long Beach Poly’s offensive line was unstoppable in Poly’s big championship win. The Jackrabbits piled up 388 team rushing yards at an average of 6.9 yards per carry. Leading the way was senior star Wendell “Wowo” Moe, who also excelled on the defensive line.

Tarra Dozier, Jordan Basketball

Jordan’s Tarra Dozier led the Panthers to a wonderful undefeated start to the season, as they claimed the Mark Keppel Tournament green division championship. Dozier was named Tournament MVP with 24 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals, and two blocks.

COLLEGE

Maddi Utti, Long Beach State Basketball

Maddi Utti was dominant for Long Beach State at the UVA Cavalier Classic as she averaged a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds per game while adding 13 steals, eight assists, and three blocks. The Beach remain undefeated on the season.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
