It’s a historic year for Lakewood boys’ water polo. The Lancers beat San Bernardino 17-4 in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs on Thursday, and will host the semifinals against Heritage at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
This is the first playoff trip for Lakewood since 2013, and they hadn’t won a postseason game in more than a decade.
“Just to host a playoff game was one of our big goals at the start of the season,” Lakewood first-year coach Charles Wright said. “So to make the playoffs and advance a couple rounds… these boys are just special. A lot of these guys are seniors and we’re going to miss them when they go, but for right now they really are leaving their marks and establishing their legacies.”
Nathan Napuhaku led Lakewood with five goals on Thursday. Aaron Talag and Ryan Martinez both scored twice.
