The Wilson Bruins and new head coach Scott Meyer have released their 2021 football schedule, which kicks off on August 20 with a home contest against the Warren Bears. That’s one of a few intriguing local matchups for the Bruins, who are coming off a unique COVID-19 year, plus a coaching change late in the offseason as Meyer took over for Mark Ziegenhagen.
“I think we have a very competitive schedule that will really prepare us for the Moore League,” Meyer said of his team’s non-league slate. “We open with a very talented Warren team so we will find out really early where we are as a team. As always, our goal will be to get better each week so we are ready for our Moore League games.”
After the Bear fight in the opener, the Bruins will then play a Saturday game on the road at San Jacinto High School on Aug. 28. Wilson will remain on the road to take on Huntington Beach in game three, before renewing their local rivalry at home against St. Anthony on Sep. 10.
The matchup between Wilson and St. Anthony has become somewhat commonplace in recent seasons, but it will bring an intriguing coaching matchup this fall. With Meyer back at Wilson and Raul Lara recently hired as the new head coach of the Saints, it will be the first time Meyer and Lara coached head-to-head since the 2009 season, when Meyer was coaching at Jordan and Lara was leading Long Beach Poly. Wilson has had St. Anthony has part of its non-league schedule for every season since 2014, going 4-2 in those contests.
Moore League play for the Bruins starts with Senior Night on Sep. 17 against Compton, one of the four teams the Bruins faced during the shortened spring football season earlier this year. Wilson did not play Cabrillo or Poly during the spring, and will face those two opponents back-to-back, hosting the Jags while playing the Jackrabbits at Vets Stadium on Oct. 1.
After the Homecoming game against Jordan on Oct. 8, Wilson will visit Lakewood the following Friday where Meyer will coach against his most recent former team. The Bruins then get their bye on the penultimate week of the regular season before closing out the year with a trip to Millikan on Oct. 29.
Prior to the official start of the 2021 season, the Bruins will host a scrimmage against Marina on Aug. 13.
