Lakewood Celebrates Signing Day

After a season of uncertainty and constant changing schedules, Lakewood High School took a moment to celebrate their senior athletes on Monday in Tim Sweeney Gymnasium.

For Cal State Northridge signee Diego Gutierrez, it’s been a busy week along with wrapping up classes and preparing for graduation next week, as well as preparing for the Lancers’ CIF-SS Division 3 matchup against Calabasas the day after Signing Day.

“These past four years have helped me become a better person and a better baseball player,” Gutierrez said. “Especially coach Spud (O’Neil). He’s a great guy and great coach.”

For the softball team, the Lancers have three athletes taking their talents to the collegiate level.

Kendall Lundberg is heading to Utah where she’s looking forward to playing in the PAC-12.

“I can’t wait to be there,” Lundberg said. “I’m looking forward to playing in front of millions of people and on TV. It’s going to be awesome.”

Along with Lundberg, Ale Mota signed with UC Davis and Brooklynn Baruch is looking to walk-on at Long Beach State.

“I’m very excited to go out there and get it,” Baruch said. “I’m very competitive and I know me going to walk-on, people are probably going to say who knows what’s going to happen with her, but I’m going to go out there and I’m going to try and take a spot. Not to step on any toes, but I like to be the best player out there and I think I’m going to have fun out there.”

In track and field, Cherish Washington-Logan picked CSUN; she will compete for CIF-SS championships in the throws this weekend.
