Taylor Johnson, Keller Middle School

Keller Middle School student Taylor Johnson made Long Beach history at last week’s LBUSD All-City Track & Field meet. Johnson won the 100m dash with a time of 12.2 seconds, breaking a nearly 40 year-old city record for middle schoolers.

Samiya Terry, Wilson Basketball

Wilson senior Samiya Terry had a special performance for the Bruins in the CIF-SS Division 3A championship last Saturday. Terry led Wilson to its first title in 20 years with 24 points and seven rebounds.

Ashley Hawkins, WIlson Basketball

Wilson star Ashley Hawkins came up big for the Bruins in their CIF-SS Division 3A championship win over Eisenhower. The junior guard had 14 points, five assists, two steals, and two rebounds in the win.

Henry Pryor, Long Beach Poly Lacrosse

Long Beach Poly’s Henry Pryor helped the Jackrabbits to a historic Moore League opening win over Wilson last week. Pryor, who’s been playing lacrosse since he was eight, scored four goals to help Poly to a 12-2 win over the Bruins.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
