Basketball Long Beach Poly St. Anthony

TONIGHT: Long Beach Poly, St. Anthony Basketball Battle at Bosco

The two Division 1 boys’ basketball teams in town will meet tonight in the semifinals of the Bosco Winter Classic, at St. John Bosco High. Long Beach Poly (4-2) and St. Anthony (10-0) will square off for the right to face the winner of Bosco and Loyola in Saturday’s tournament championship.

Both teams are in Division 1 and both are ranked: St. Anthony at No. 9 and Poly at No. 16. Although the Jackrabbits have a huge edge in history, the Saints have been better this year, with an undefeated 10-0 record.

Saints coach Allen Caveness downplayed the importance of any single game after his team blew out Gahr to improve to 10-0.

“If we start saying oh we want to win a championship oh we want to beat Poly, the kids get tight,” he said. “We aren’t worried about anything other than getting better every day.”

Poly similarly didn’t want to buy into the buzz around the game.

“That’s just another non league game for us,” said Poly coach Shelton Diggs.

“There’s been a lot of talk about it, we’re not going to worry about any of that,” said Poly star junior Peyton Watson. “We’re just going to come out and play.”
