Long Beach football fans can breathe easy.
Friday’s Moore League football game between Long Beach Poly and Wilson has been moved back to Wilson High after the Bruins administration met with LBUSD his afternoon. Kickoff is still scheduled for 7 p.m. and tickets are still available.
The562.org reported earlier today that the game had been moved to Cerritos College due to stadium capacity and safety concerns. A few hours later, Wilson athletic director Jeff Evans was contacted by Cerritos College and told that they would not be able to accommodate the game on short notice. Evans confirmed that the proposed contract was not yet signed by both parties.
“We were moving as fast as we could because that’s what we thought was going to be in place,” Evans said of announcing the site change to Cerritos. “Things were rolling, we had a verbal agreement with the people who run their facilities and we were working on the contract when they reached out to us and said they can’t staff the event. That’s no knock on Cerritos. They just can’t do it on such short notice.”
Evans added that the original concerns with space and safety for the game at Wilson High are being addressed but LBUSD.
“(LBUSD) said ‘If you want to move it to Cerritos, we’ll foot the bill. If you want to keep it there, and you want to try to get another bleacher, we’ll help you with that cost,’ because they’re about wanting it to be a safe event. They’re trying to get extra school safety officers to be at the site with LBPD so that it will be a safe venue for everybody. We talked with the Superintendent and our school safety office and they’ve got a plan in place.”
Cost: $8 general admission, $4 children/seniors, $3 students with ID
Tickets: Tickets are available at both schools’ bankers this week for students or the general public, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Both campuses are closed to visitors during lunch. Follow @562sports on Twitter for updates.
