Volleyball: Lakewood Falls To Foothill

STORY BY MATT SIMON

Lakewood coach Mike Wadley was not shy when he made the schedule for his young team this season.

For Wadley, iron sharpens iron the Lancers have had some tough nonleague competition with games against Mater Dei, Marymount, Los Alamitos and Santa Margarita.

Saturday was no different as the Lancers (7-6) took on a tough Foothill team that’s ranked 10th in California by Maxpreps.

In a hard fought match to cap the Steve Lewis Volleyfest, Foothill defeated Lakewood 25-20, 25-20, 15-25, 25-22.

“Foothill is really good,” Wadley said. “That’s a very good team, they had a really good year last year and that’s why I scheduled them. There’s a reason for it, we want to get better.”

For the young Lancers they found themselves out of rhythm at times, but Samarah DaCoud and Laura Williams took turns lighting a fire for the Lancers as they combined for more than 20 kills and played a big part in Lakewood’s third set victory.

“I’m really proud of our girls,” Wadley said. “They played really hard tonight.”

Lakewood will continue league play when the Lancers travel to take on Compton on Monday.
