Football: St. Anthony Falls To Warren

STORY BY MATT SIMON

In a battle of potent passing games, the St Anthony football team fell 44-27 to Warren on Friday night at Clark Field.

Warren’s quarterback Dylan Guerra threw for 363 yards and four touchdowns as the Bears’ offense was humming from the start.

On the game’s opening play, Guerra connected with Xavier Osbey for a 90-yard touchdown to put Warren up 6-0 after a missed PAT.

After two punts and a loss of downs, Warren’s Eimajah Hunter extended the Bears’ lead to 14-0 with 2:57 remaining in the first quarter.

“I think some guys were scared to start,” St. Anthony sophomore Sone Aupiu said. “We just needed to settle down.”

After trailing the Bears (1-0) 29-0 with three minutes left until halftime, the Saints (1-1) scored two touchdowns as senior quarterback Lucas Lehmar found Aupiu and Jelani Hopkins for touchdowns of 30 and 28 yards, respectively.

St. Anthony carried that momentum until the third quarter as the Saints marched 61 yards on a 12-play drive that was capped when Lehmar found senior Riley Jenkins for a 31-yard touchdown to cut Warren’s lead to 36-21.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” St. Anthony coach Mario Morales said. “They kept fighting tonight.”

Lehmar finished the night 15-for-30 for 210 yards and four touchdowns. Hopkins finished the game with four catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
