HIGH SCHOOL

Arnold Giron, Cabrillo Soccer

Sophomore Arnold Giron has marked his name in the history books with a legendary playoff run. Giron scored 11 goals in seven playoff games, and capped that sensational run with a hat trick in last weekend’s CIF State championship win over Westview of San Diego.

Deja Williams, Long Beach Poly Basketball

Poly’s season ended in the CIF State quarterfinals, but senior Deja Williams provided some memorable performances. In a 50-30 domination over CIF-SS Division 1 champion Chaminade in their state opener, Williams had 19 points. In a loss to Rosary, Williams had 17 points including a game-tying 3-pointer to send it to overtime.

Aniah Cutler, Long Beach Poly Soccer

Before falling to Mira Costa in the CIF State Division 2 semifinals, Long Beach Poly won their first-ever state playoff game, 3-0 over El Camino Real. Washington State commit Aniah Cutler was a star in that game, with a goal and an assist, employing a physical style to dominate the ECR back line.

COLLEGE

Vincent Calhoun, Long Beach State Track

Redshirt senior and Long Beach Poly product Vincent Calhoun is back and stronger than ever for Long Beach State after sitting out last year due to injury. Calhoun cleared  lifetime best mark of 7-03 in the high jump last weekend, good enough for the No. 1 spot in the nation and the No. 2 all-time mark in LBSU history.
