Congratulations to this week’s Athletes of the Week and thanks to Naples Rib Company for their sponsorship.

HIGH SCHOOL

Justin Rene, Long Beach Poly Basketball

Long Beach Poly went 3-2 last week, losing to St. John Bosco in the third-place game of the Bosco Ghar Winter Classic. Senior Justin Rene had a great week, averaging 23.2 points per game to lead the Jackrabbits. Rene also picked up a scholarship offer from UC Riverside.

Jabari Steward, Compton Basketball

Compton junior big man Jabari Steward is a rarity in the Moore League: a genuine post player. The 6’8” Steward had a big night against Millikan last week to help Compton get off to a 1-0 start in league play, putting up 22 points and 15 rebounds in a 12-point Compton win.

Asia Jordan, Lakewood Basketball

Asia Jordan looks like a legitimate Moore League Player of the Year candidate, especially after a big opening night against Wilson. Jordan led her Lancers to a 57-18 victory with a huge night individually, putting up 26 points an 22 rebounds, both of which are around her season average.

COLLEGE

Naomi Hunt, Long Beach State Basketball

The Long Beach State women’s basketball team broke a frustrating losing streak last week with a 57-50 win over Grand Canyon, thanks to great defense but also great production off the bench from Naomi Hunt. The sophomore had 20 points in the win over the Lopes.
