There’s a lot that Cabrillo will want back from its matchup against Dominguez on Friday night. The Jaguars never really found their footing after falling behind early to the Dons, as Dominguez walked away with a 47-7 win to take sole possession of the second guaranteed playoff spot in the Hub City League.
“We had a lot of mental mistakes,” said Cabrillo coach Malcolm Manuel. “They did some good things up front at the line, but we know how to adjust to those things and instead we just pissed down our leg a bit. They played well but I agree with what you said—they’re not 40 points better than us.”
Dominguez was able to lean on senior running back Rayvon Ford, who had 12 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns, along with a 49-yard touchdown reception. Quarterback Terrell Malone and sophomore athlete Jaymier Williams each added a rushing touchdown, while junior Kyle Bias hauled in a touchdown reception.
On the other end, Cabrillo quarterback Fernando Leanos finished 10-for-23 passing with three interceptions and added a rushing touchdown. All three interceptions came in the first half, and Dominguez scored 21 points off those turnovers en route to a 35-0 lead at the break.
“We tried to run the ball a little more effectively but we struggled identifying in the box with the blitz and stuff like that,” Manuel said of the offensive problems. “We went over the entire week and I thought we did pretty good. They showed some different looks, and I think that we covered everything but it was just tough up front today.”
Dominguez forced a three-and-out to start the game before scoring on its opening possession, as the Dons put together a seven-play, six-minute drive that ended with a four-yard touchdown run from Ford. The senior had five carries for 36 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive alone.
Cabrillo then threw interceptions on three of its next five drives, while Dominguez scored touchdowns on four of its final five possessions of the half. After the first interception by Jaymier Williams, Dominguez went on a 13-play drive that finished with a three-yard touchdown run from Malone.
The Dons got the ball right back after an interception by Kamarion Munns, which set Dominguez up inside the Cabrillo 10-yard line. Two plays later, Ford punched in a one-yard touchdown.
After a Cabrillo turnover on downs, Dominguez took over in Jaguars territory as Malone found Ford for a 49-yard touchdown. Nicholas Kendall came up with another Dominguez interception two drives later, before Malone connected with Bias for a six-yard touchdown to give the Dons a 35-0 lead at halftime.
Dominguez had just one offensive touchdown in the second half, which came on a long opening drive out of the break. The Dons marched down the field on an eight-play drive that lasted nearly six minutes before Williams punched in a four-yard touchdown. Williams also returned a kick for a touchdown on the final play of the game to cap the scoring.
Cabrillo did find some success through the air in the second half, as Anthony McKinney finished with four catches for 50 yards. One of McKinney’s second-half receptions set Cabrillo up at the one-yard line, where Leanos capped off a drive aided by Dominguez personal fouls with a rushing touchdown on the Jaguars’ final possession.
Cabrillo will finish out the regular season at Compton Early College next week.
“For some of these guys, it’s their last regular season for Cabrillo. They just need their head up so we can end the year on a high note and get us to four wins. It might not sound like a lot to some people, but that’s a good milestone for us. A win would get us to 4-6 and we can just let our fate lie in the Southern Section’s hands.”
