There are major postseason implications on Friday night as the Hub City League continues at Cabrillo, where the Jaguars (3-5, 1-1) will host Dominguez (4-4, 1-1). Kickoff is set for 7 pm.

In a game that could largely decide the Hub City League’s final standings with one week left in the regular season, Friday might very well be a battle for a playoff spot. While Compton is 3-0 and in the driver’s seat for a league championship, Cabrillo and Dominguez both enter the matchup at 1-1. A win would put either team in a strong position to secure one of the league’s two automatic playoff berths, with Cabrillo facing winless Compton Early College next week while Dominguez will face 1-1 Centennial.

The Jaguars are coming off a 50-14 loss against Compton last week, but left themselves some positives to build on heading into this week. Quarterback Fernando Leanos threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns in that game, including one each to running back Armon Lumpkin and receiver Zyair Hughes.

At this point in the season, you can expect Leanos to have a busy night on Friday, as the Jaguars have thrown the ball on 80% of their offensive snaps and have 12 passing touchdowns compared to just three on the ground. Leanos is averaging nearly 260 passing yards per game and has nine of those touchdowns to go along with five interceptions.

Leanos’ top target has been Stephen Walker, who’s averaging 147 receiving yards per game with four touchdowns, while Danny Lopez is averaging 63 yards per game with two touchdowns. On the ground, Lumpkin is averaging over 41 yards per game and has all three of Cabrillo’s rushing touchdowns this season.

Most of those players will be on both sides of the ball, where Cabrillo will have to stop a Dominguez offense with a much different approach that relies on the ground game. The Dons have rushed the ball over 60% of the time, led by a senior backfield tandem of Darrell Frazier and Terrell Malone. The pair are each averaging over 100 rushing yards per game and have combined for 10 of the team’s 14 rushing touchdowns.

Malone will also be at the helm as quarterback, where he’s averaging just 76 passing yards per game with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Last week, Malone went 3-for-3 for 113 passing yards and three touchdowns in Dominguez’s 47-0 win over Compton Early College.

Cabrillo will finish the regular season on the road at Compton Early College next week, while Dominguez will host Centennial.
