The Compton football team is in a similar position it was in a year ago.
The Tarbabes (2-0) are unbeaten as they prepare for their home opener against Bishop Alemany after picking up an impressive road win against Orange Vista last week.
Last year, Compton stumbled in week three and it snowballed into three straight losses as the Tarbabes found themselves unable to qualify for the playoffs by the end of the season.
However, this year’s team is in a completely different position roster wise. Senior Edward Rivera has emerged as a legitimate threat in all phases of the game after a four-touchdown performance – including scores on the ground, in the receiving game and on special teams.
That start to the season from Rivera has been amplified by junior quarterback Donnie Johnson III’s ability to take care of the ball on his way to nearly 300 yards passing and three touchdowns on the year.
Defensively, senior Jay’rome Norwood has been on a tear to start the season averaging 10 tackles a game as a huge complement to a solid performance from the Tarbabes’ defensive line that’s been able to create pressure on opposing offenses.
Bishop Alemany (0-2) enters the week on an 8-game losing streak dating back to last season, but the Warriors are a well-coached team that compete in the very competitive Angelus League.
Michael Boyd is an explosive playmaker out of the backfield, while Steven Krase has shown the ability to make tight throws to his receivers.
Compton has plenty of playmakers to make things difficult for the Warriors’ but the battle will be in the trenches where both teams have plenty of size on both sides of the ball.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Compton.
