Compton will look to build on an impressive start to the season when the Tarbabes travel to Perris to take on Orange Vista Thursday night.
Both teams enter the matchup 1-0 after convincing season-opening wins. Compton opened its season with a 41-13 road win over Jordan, while Orange Vista defeated Linfield Christian 25-6.
Compton shook off a slow start finishing with more than 300 yards of offense against Jordan.
Senior Jay’Rome Norwood was a focal point for Donnie Johnson early on, recording a team-high 56 receiving yards in the opener while also making an impact defensively with six tackles. Senior running back Nate Willard led Compton with 47 rushing yards, while Compton’s defense had three interceptions.
The Tarbabes went with a running back by committee in the opener, but you can expect Compton to get senior Edward Rivera involved after a quiet offensive performance to go with one highlight-reel interception on defense.
Orange Vista (1-0) went 8-4 last season, won the Ivy League and advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs.
The Coyotes enter the season with plenty of new faces across the field after some key contributors from their league championship team transferred to new schools. Sophomore Joaquin Lopez is the lone quarterback on the Orange Vista roster and Eddie Alvarado has emerged as one of his favorite targets.
In the backfield, junior Elijah Jones is capable of big runs especially when he gets into space and Preston Yen can attack the gaps when his line opens running lanes.
For Compton, Thursday will be another early barometer for the team going up against a team that’s been in division 4-6 the last few years. The Tarbabes went 4-6 and 2-4 in league play last season.
