Huntington Beach senior quarterback Brady Edmunds is arguably the best passer in the country–and on Thursday night he certainly looked the part in a game at Millikan. The Ohio State commit made every kind of throw imaginable while piling up gaudy stats in a 42-14 win over the Rams.

Edmunds put up video game numbers going 24/31 for 434 yards and six touchdowns, also rushing for 30 yards.

“Brady’s a dog,” said Millikan coach Romeo Pellum. “He’s the best quarterback in the country, in my opinion, and today he showed it.”

Pellum said what made Edmunds so hard to defend was his competitive fire as well as the variety of throws he can make, all of which he did against the Rams. “He can pick you apart: if you’re playing off he’s going to throw short, if you’re lacking he’s going to take his shots. And he has good touch on the ball. But we had our opportunities–when we made mistakes, he made us pay.”

The teams started out the game trading scoreless drives, as the first two Rams possessions went three and out, and the Oilers came away empty despite a pair of deep drives thanks to some penalties. Ryan Carter led the Rams offense on the ground while Edmunds picked apart the Millikan defense for the Oilers.

Huntington Beach got on top midway through the second quarter as Edmunds hit Arizona State commit Dylin Bruce on a slant that Bruce took for 82 yards and a score. The Rams answered with their best drive of the half as QB Jonah Tuaniga was able to push the ball downfield with a pair of completions to Carter and Kansas commit Jay Williams. But the Rams had a touchdown pass by Tuaniga called back on a holding penalty and then three straight incompletions led to a 42-yard field goal attempt, which fell short.

The Oilers got the ball back with 1:42 remaining in the half and were not content to settle for a one-score halftime lead. Edmunds hit Bruce and Skylar Robinson for big gains, then was sacked with 15 seconds left on the Millikan 30. With no timeouts remaining, he hit Bruce who made a defender miss and dove into the end zone to make it 14-0 at halftime.

Edmunds was 14/16 for 264 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half, while Bruce had five catches for 147 yards and two scores.

“I think early on our defense was playing lights out, but they give up two explosive plays late in the first half and we can’t win that way,” said Pellum.

In the second half, the Rams came out and made a statement, as Matteo Palma picked off Edmunds deep in the Oilers’ territory to set the Rams up with a perfect scoring opportunity. Carter toted the rock six yards to put it on the one and then lineman Aaden Muasau plunged across the goal line to cut the lead to 14-7.

The Oilers immediately answered however, on a 55-yard pass by Edmunds to kick off another touchdown drive that saw them go back up by two scores. The Rams’ next drive stalled at midfield but turned to disaster on a fumble by the punter, which gave the Oilers a short porch they didn’t need. Edmunds cashed it in immediately with a 36-yard strike on the next play to make it 28-7.

The Rams got back into it late in the third quarter on a short run for a score by Carter, which capped off Tuaniga’s best drive passing.

But once again the Oilers had the answer as Edmunds hit Skyler Robinson for a 24-yard touchdown. He would add a sixth touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter. Dylin Bruce led the Oilers with seven catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns.

“This is just the beginning, it’s not the end,” said Pellum. “This is just step one of where we’re going, and it showed us who we are right now. We’re going to get better from here, and I’m going to get better from here.”

Tuaniga finished with 138 yards passing while Carter had 107 total yards rushing and receiving. Williams had six catches for 80 yards to lead the Rams but also lost a fumble.

Millikan (0-1) will travel to Loyola while Huntington Beach (1-0) will host Los Alamitos next week. Local football fans who’d like another chance to see Edmunds in person before he departs for college can catch the Oilers at Wilson on Sep. 4.
