The562’s Athletes of the Week is sponsored by the Long Beach Century Club.

HIGH SCHOOL

Daunte Bell, Millikan Baseball

Daunte Bell earned another Athlete of the Week honor with his performance against Lakewood High School. The ace pitched a complete game against the Lancers, racking up seven strikeouts and giving up no walks while also hitting an inside-the-park home run to power Millikan’s offense. 

Nico Thiem, Wilson Baseball 

Even with a shorthanded lineup, Wilson baseball claimed a big Moore League baseball victory over rivals Long Beach Poly. Nico Thiem went 2-for-3 in the 6-2 win with an RBI triple.

Brayden Ogawa, Long Beach Poly Boys’ Swim and Dive

Brayden Ogawa captured a big diving win for the Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits in CIF. In Division I, Ogawa was the champion diver as only a freshman.

COLLEGE

Ryan Gregory, LBSU Track & Field

Long Beach State’s Ryan Gregory won the Big West decathlon championship last weekend. Gregory had first-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles, pole vault and the 1500-meters.

Ian Dien, LBCC Swim & Dive

Ian Dien was LBCC’s top diver this year, earning honors as a State Champion. Dien was champion on the 1M and 3M dives, being names the Men’s Diver of the Year for his success.

Samira Semaan, LBCC Swim & Dive

LBCC Women’s Swim had a dominant year in the water and Samira Semaan led the charge. Semaan consistently placed first in all of her events, winning Co-Swimmer of the Year honors.

Lina Apodaca, LBSU Softball

Lina Apodaca was a standout for the Beach this year, finishing with a team-high batting average of .373 and a .937 OPS. She also collected the most hits with 73 and most doubles with 21 on the season, collecting three hits, an RBI and two doubles in Long Beach State’s final two games this year.

Nina Fife
Nina Fife is a junior at Pepperdine University double majoring in Journalism and English with a writing and rhetoric emphasis. She began working with The562 in the inaugural intern class before being hired as their Social Media Director and now Assistant Editor. Nina is a proud Long Beach schools alum who graduated with valedictorian honors.
