Long Beach Poly junior Tegan Breaux was ready for a bounce back performance against Wilson as the two teams battled on Thursday at Joe Rodgers Field.

Although the Jackrabbits walked away with the win in the first contest against the Bruins, Breaux didn’t have the game she wanted. In the second round, the junior shined for Poly as she pitched a complete game scattering four hits while only giving up one run as the Jackrabbits defeated Wilson, 7-1.

“My mentality was they got me once, they’re not taking me twice. Last time they got five runs on me, and this time I was like, they can’t do that again. I’ve got to put that work in. I have my team behind me. My curveball was really working for me today, and my screwball.”

Breaux not only got it done in the circle for the Jackrabbits but at the plate as well as she went 3-3 with a triple and an RBI. She also drew a walk on an efficient day at the plate.

After a scoreless first inning, Breaux got on base with a leadoff walk. After Abigail Rodriguez came in as a courtesy runner for Breaux and eventually scored on a Bruins’ infield error to give Poly a 1-0 lead after the first.

The Bruins got their third baserunner on a two-out walk in the second, but Breaux stranded the runner. After a scoreless third inning, the Jackrabbits pushed the lead to 2-0 after Alayna Veavealagi doubled to push a run across.

The Jackrabbits defense continued to make plays through the contest as the defense behind Breaux made play after play to keep the Bruins off the base included Bailey Holder who was a magnet at short stop.

“Bailey had a ton of putouts, and the ones she wasn’t able to get to were just plays you wouldn’t expect anyone to make,” Poly coach Elizabeth Sanches said. She played a very solid short, and our defense was great.”

Poly’s potent office finally got going in the fifth inning as the first six batters got on base and the Jackrabbits scored three runs thanks to a 2-run double from Holder and a RBI single from Breaux. The Jackrabbits added another run in the sixth and looked to try and shut down the Bruins, but Wilson attacked after Sacha Zalamea hit a 1-out single.

Tatum Yates followed with a fielder choice and scored after Paulyne Henderson hit a pop fly to cut Poly’s lead to 6-1.

“It’s tough because they’re a good hitting team too, so we’ve got to keep it close,” Wilson coach George Molina said.  “We did well last time and got five runs off them, but [Tegan] looked better today, especially against the bottom of our order. I think the only hits we had were from our first four hitters. Four hits isn’t going to cut it against a team like Poly. We know they’re going to put up runs.”

The Jackrabbits added another run at the top of the seventh before Breaux sat the Bruins down in order to end the game.

Wilson will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on Millikan, and Poly has four games over the next seven days as they visit Carson for a non-league contest on Saturday.
