After winning the CIF Southern Section Northern Division gold medal last week, Millikan junior Chris Anguiano said the job wasn’t over.
The junior can add another gold medal to his collection after defeating Fountain Valley’s Mason McDonnell for the CIF-SS Masters 157-pound blue division championship on Saturday at Sonora High. With the win, Anguiano has officially written his name in the upper echelon of wrestlers to come out of Long Beach.
With his the gold medal, Anguiano is the first Millikan boys wrestler to win at Masters since Edwin Van in 1984 – when he accomplished the feat to take the 168-pound title.
“We are all proud of Chris, the jobs not done,” Millikan coach Blake Lovato said. “Looking forward to next week.”
Anguiano will now turn his attention to the State Tournament to complete one of the best high school season’s anyone in the city has ever had.
While Anguiano was the lone Millikan wrestler to advance to state, Long Beach Poly had two wrestlers punch their ticket to next week’s three-day tournament at Dignity Health Arena in Bakersfield.
Senior Lincoln Chung defeated Esperanza’s Marcello Calavitta for the bronze medal in the 138-pound blue division. He will be joined by junior Knox Espinoza who defeated La Serna’s Josiah Leyvas in the 120-pound gold division bronze medal match.
