Compton softball enters the 2026 season in a moment of transition and opportunity under first-year head coach Danira Iolama. With a brand-new campus and one of the most impressive softball facilities in the area, the Tarbabes are looking to turn attention into progress and pride into results.
“This field is amazing,” Iolama said. “It’s one of the better fields I’ve seen, even compared to some community colleges and Division I schools. We’re grateful to have what we have.”
After spending several seasons practicing at Roosevelt Middle School, the move to Compton High’s new campus has given the program a much-needed focal point. The facility has become a key tool in drawing attention back to a program that has struggled in the win column over the past several years.
“People didn’t even know about it,” Iolama said. “The field has really helped us catch people’s attention.”
While the facility represents progress, Iolama inherited a roster still finding its footing. Many of Compton’s players are relatively new to the sport, even with the MLB Urban Youth Academy located just minutes away.
“A lot of my girls didn’t even know the Urban Youth Academy was an option,” Iolama said. “Now they’re using it, and it’s been huge for us. We’re just trying to grow the game of softball in the city of Compton.”
Despite the challenges, Iolama believes the foundation is stronger than outsiders might expect. The team’s seniors, in particular, have already shown leadership and resilience after enduring difficult seasons.
“We just want to give our seniors a good year,” she said. “That’s the goal.”
Leading that senior class is catcher Ericka Soto, who returns as one of the program’s most established contributors. Soto will anchor the defense behind the plate while also serving as a vocal leader.
“My own skills have improved a lot,” Soto said. “My throwing and hitting and just the small simple stuff. I feel like this season I’m going to make better contact.”
Joining her is senior first baseman Valeria Hernandez, a transfer who adds experience and stability to the infield. Junior Alexis Miramontes is also expected to play a key role after showing athleticism and versatility.
“I got lucky with this group,” Iolama said. “They love the game. They keep showing up. I came into a good group ready to work.”
Compton will rely heavily on chemistry and growth as the season progresses. With a roster made up primarily of seniors and a few underclassmen, the Tarbabes are focused less on the standings and more on competitiveness, confidence, and establishing a new standard.
The Tarbabes season starts on Feb. 26 when they take on Animo Leadership and Hawthorne Math and Science Academy the following day. Compton starts league action on March 12 against Cabrillo.
