Jojo Wicker, Millikan Boys’ Basketball

Jojo Wicker was unreal for Millikan in its decisive win over Long Beach Poly last week. Wicker scored a team-high 27 points while nailing seven three-pointers to help the Rams clinch their first outright Moore League championship since 1988.

Sequoia Newman, Long Beach Poly Girls’ Water Polo

Senior Sequoia Newman led the way for Long Beach Poly in its lopsided playoff win against Estancia, pouring on eight goals in less than three quarters to help send the Jackrabbits to the CIF-SS Division 4 second round.

Mckenna Rosenberg, Millikan Girls’ Water Polo

Sophomore Mckenna Rosenberg had a game-high seven goals in Millikan’s dominant win over Canyon in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.

Roselyn Lucindo & Flor Garibay, Cabrillo Girls’ Water Polo

Senior Flor Garibay and freshman Roselyn Lucindo led the way for the Cabrillo Jaguars in their first ever playoff win in program history. The duo split time in the cage to earn the shutout and combined for 11 goals. Lucindo scored seven while Garibay scored four, as the Jags defeated Mark Keppel 22-0 to advance to the CIF-SS Division 5 second round.

Matthew Searles, Wilson Boys’ Basketball

Wilson point guard Matthew Searles came through with a team-high 18 points in the win over Cabrillo last week, scoring 14 in the second half. The win came in a play-in game to clinch a playoff birth for Wilson.

Samajay Jackson, Jordan Boys’ Basketball

Samajay Jackson was the hero for J-Town last week, as his buzzer-beater sent the Panthers to the playoffs with a 64-62 win over Wilson. Jackson had 16 points, including six of Jordan’s final eight over the last three minutes of the game

Janiah Lorn, Jordan Girls’ Basketball

Senior Janiah Lorn helped Jordan clinch its first co-Moore League title since 1996 alongside fellow senior Jah’asharee Moore, as the pair both scored in double figures in a senior-night win over Wilson. Lorn had 11 while Moore chipped in 10.

Gannan Erickson, Wilson Boys’ Wrestling

After being a runner-up last season, Gannan Erickson took home the gold medal at the Moore League boys’ wrestling finals, winning the 165-pound division.

Eli Aquino began working with The562 as part of its inaugural intern class in 2021 and continued throughout high school as a freelancer. He joined The562’s staff in 2024 and was later promoted to Editorial Associate & Staff Writer. He is currently entering his second year at Long Beach State.
