Wilson (5-1, 2-0) will look to remain unbeaten in Moore League play on Friday when they host Cabrillo (1-6, 0-3) at 7 pm.
Wilson enters the matchup riding momentum from last week’s wire-to-wire win over Compton, where the Bruins held off the Tarbabes on the final play to earn a 23–21 victory and their second straight Moore League win.
Through a half dozen games this season, Wilson has leaned on a simple but effective formula for success, built around protecting the football on offense and creating turnovers on defense. Defensively, the Bruins have forced 13 turnovers this season, with 11 interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
QB Mack Cooper has been efficient under center, posting a 12:2 touchdown:interception ratio while averaging nearly 200 passing yards per game. Senior Thomas Jones leads the Bruins’ pass catching group averaging 90 receiving yards per game.
The Bruins have maintained a balanced 60/40 run-pass split, with a back field led by senior running back Kori Scott. Scott carried the ball 18 times for 138 yards and a touchdown last week against Compton, while sophomore Jemel Grigsby added 74 yards on 11 carries.
Cabrillo is looking for some life after a couple of tough outings through their Moore League slate against Millikan, Compton and Lakewood. The Jags put together a promising performance against the Tarbabes two weeks ago, led by quarterback Fernando Leanos.
Leanos threw 36 passes against Compton for 279 passing yards and three total touchdowns, while receiver Danny Lopez had 110 receiving yards and a score. Armon Lumpkin added 68 yards that game with a touchdown.
